Accommodation

Types of accommodation

There are two types of student accommodation in Germany: dormitories located on or near the university campus and private accommodation in a flat or an apartment. In Germany, most of the apartments are usually unfurnished! To save money and to get bigger flats, students often set up an apartment-sharing community and live together. We have two dormitories on the Paderborn campus which are run and managed by the student services (Studentenwerk). You can apply for a one-room apartment or a room with shared kitchen and bathroom which you usually have to share with between one and three other students.

Please visit the homepage of the Studentenwerk (student services) directly.

Costs

Rental charges currently range from €200 to €300 per room and month (private renting), including costs for electricity, gas, water, etc. If rooms are furnished, the landlord is likely to ask for a deposit which is usually of two month’s rents. This is returned to you on departure, as long as the room is left in a satisfactory condition and all rent payments have been made.

Applying for a place in a dormitory

If you would like to live in a dormitory, you probably have to register on a waiting list ranging from three months up to one year, depending on which dormitory you are interested in. This is why we strongly recommend that you register on the waiting list of the student services as soon as possible. You can also register if you have not received the confirmation of your language course or the Notice of Admission yet.

Here you can apply online for a room in a dormitory.

List of accommodation possibilities

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the local paper “Westfalen-Blatt” offers a private housing market. You can buy the paper at every newspaper kiosk in the city.

The best time to find accommodation easily is September, when many students move out as they finish their studies.
